Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye: A Life of Humble Beginnings, Divine Calling, and Global Impact
Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, widely known as Pastor E.A. Adeboye or “Daddy G.O.,” serves as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) worldwide. His journey from a poor village boy with dreams of academic greatness to one of the most influential Christian leaders globally exemplifies faith, humility, and obedience to God’s call. By the Grace of God, Under his leadership since 1981, RCCG has grown from a small Nigerian denomination with about 39 parishes into a global movement with over 40,000 parishes in more than 186 nations of the world.

Early Life & Education Of Pastor Adeboye
Born on March 2, 1942, into a humble peasant farming family in Ifewara, Osun State, southwestern Nigeria, Enoch Adeboye faced significant poverty. His parents were Pa. Moses Adeboye, a peasant farmer and part-time traditional musician, and Ma. Esther Adeboye, a trader who dealt in locust beans. His family was so poor that, as he often humorously notes, ‘even the poor referred to them as poor’. Despite these challenges, his parents sacrificed greatly—selling possessions and borrowing from neighbors—to support his education. His brilliance shone at a very early age; teachers recognized his scholarly potential, particularly in science and mathematics.
In 1956, he gained admission to the prestigious Ilesha Grammar School in Osun State. He later pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1967 (studies began at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, but were completed at Ife due to the Nigerian Civil War). He obtained a Master’s degree in Hydrodynamics from the University of Lagos in 1969 and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the same institution in 1975. His academic prowess earn him a lecturing job at the University of Lagos, where he aspired to become one of Africa’s youngest university presidents.
In 1967, the same year he completed his first degree, he married Foluke Adenike Adeyokunnu. Their union has been a cornerstone of his life and ministry.
Conversion and Entry into Ministry
Adeboye’s life took a dramatic turn in 1973. When his daughter fell seriously ill and did not respond to conventional medicine, a relative invited the family to a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), founded by Reverend Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi. On July 29, 1973, at age 31, Enoch Adeboye committed his life to Christ. The uneducated but supernaturally gifted founder, who could read the Bible in Yoruba, left a profound impression.
Initially serving as an interpreter (translating Akindayomi’s Yoruba sermons into English), Adeboye was ordained as a pastor in RCCG around 1975–1977. He demonstrated exceptional zeal by pioneering Bible study meetings, crusades, revivals, outreaches, and evangelistic programs known as “Congress” across southwestern Nigeria. He received solid scriptural grounding under Akindayomi’s tutelage, unknowingly preparing for greater responsibilities.

Leadership of RCCG and Explosive Growth
Reverend Akindayomi passed away in 1981, and through what Adeboye describes as divine orchestration, the leadership mantle passed to him as the second General Overseer. At the time, RCCG had only about 39 parishes. His appointment ended his promising academic career, redirecting his focus entirely to ministry. He emphasized making the church accessible to all social strata without compromising holiness, introducing “Model Parishes” that attracted professionals and the elite while maintaining compassion for the poor and needy.
Key innovations under his leadership include:
- Holy Ghost Service (HGS): Launched in the mid-1980s as a monthly gathering (initially on his birthday request in 1989 for his 47th year). It features praise, worship, prayer, deliverance, and preaching. Attendance grew massively, necessitating a move to the vast Redemption Camp (formerly uninhabited forest land) in Ogun State, now a major hub.
- Holy Ghost Congress: The inaugural open-air event in Lekki, Lagos, on December 18, 1998, drew over 7 million people (reported by CNN and BBC), one of the largest single gatherings in history. Subsequent events, now a multi-day December program at Redemption Camp, regularly attract millions.
Other major programs include the annual March Special Holy Ghost Service, RCCG Conventions worldwide, Festival of Life crusades (notably in London and the US), and leadership conferences. These have drawn millions and facilitated countless salvations, healings, and deliverances.RCCG’s expansion has been phenomenal: from a local church to a global network with strong presences in the US (over 600 parishes, concentrated in states like Texas, California, Maryland, Illinois, and Washington D.C.), the UK, Europe, Asia, and beyond. Adeboye’s vision includes planting an RCCG parish within five minutes’ walk of every home worldwide.
